Graeme Henry
" I was senior Lecturer and Chairperson in the Division of Drama at La Trobe University, until I resigned in 1992 to concentrate on developing my art skills. My art education has been somewhat eclectic, beginning with courses and workshops at the Council of Adult Education, progressing to Phillip Institute of Technology (as it then was) and the La Trobe Street Gallery. One of many courses was in lithography with Peter Lancaster. I moved from Melbourne to Cape Paterson in 2001.
Most of my work derives from extensive travels within Australia, especially in some of the more remote areas, using a four wheel drive and camping. So it tends to be landscape-based, and realistic, but often with an individual and unusual accent. For instance, one series features familiar tourist icons such as Uluru and Kakadu, with a family of Easter Bunnies in the foreground: symbols of tourism and the colonisation of Australia. Another series of charcoal drawings and lithographs explores granite inselbergs and dead redgums, both familiar features of the Australian landscape, but again with symbolic quality.
I have exhibited at A.R.T. Gallery in Melbourne, Eltham Wiregrass Gallery, 69 Smith St and Coalfields Art Gallery as well as numerous charity exhibitions. My work has been included in the National Works on Paper Exhibition at Mornington, and the Swan Hill National Print and Drawing Awards. I have won a number of awards".
